International Domestic Workers’ Day

The International Domestic Workers’ Day is observed every year, and the Alliance marks it because it touches the work of care: who gives it, who receives it, and what it costs the people who do it unpaid.

Why it matters for care

The day marks the adoption of ILO Convention 189, the first international standard for domestic workers. Tens of millions of them, most of them women and many of them migrants, are still outside the labour laws of the countries they work in.

How the Alliance marks the day

• A set of facts and figures on the day’s theme and care, for members to use in their own channels.
• A call for stories from members: what the day looks like in their country and in their work.
• A briefing for policymakers on the care dimension of the day’s theme.

Take part

Members are invited to mark the day in their own channels and to tell the secretariat what they did; it is collected for the members’ newsletter. Materials are available in English and Spanish a week ahead.
